Bush camps that go beyond: immerse yourself in a selection of Africa’s finest

Bush camps that go beyond: immerse yourself in a selection of Africa’s finest

What we love about Africa is what Africa loves to give in spades. Open air, spacious freedom, pristine wilderness and breathtakingly beautiful wildlife and birds. Getting up close to Africa’s offerings is what a great safari is all about and we believe there’s nothing better than combining a selection of real bush camps in remote parts of Africa with exceptionally good guiding…

In Zambia, the Jeffery & McKeith (J&M) Safaris team has unrivalled knowledge of the Central Kafue, where you can enjoy exclusive access to remote and secluded wildlife areas.

“Nowhere else have we ever felt more engaged in the action and scenery than we do here; no longer just an observer, you are a part of it all.”

J&M Safari’s intimate Musekese Camp is set inland from the Kafue River on a permanent lagoon where you can sit and watch as the wildlife comes to you. Or go exploring by foot, birding or tracking with your professional guide, or even up the river by boat.. Kafue National Park boasts four of the Big Five – leopard, lion, buffalo and elephant – and you may also see cheetah, civet, hyaena and wild dog, plus over 400 species of bird.

We’re excited to introduce a new but equally authentic camp in Zambia – in the South Luangwa National Park. Owner-run Mapazi tented bush camp is nestled under mature trees on the banks of the Luangwa River and all activities here are privately guided by Deb Tittle, a renowned safari guide with over 20 years’ experience. Explore Luangwa’s unspoilt wilderness with her, track big game on foot, watch magical birdlife and uncover some of natures’ best kept secrets.

We couldn’t talk about authentic camping experiences without mentioning Beagle Expeditions’ mobile operation in the Okavango’s Moremi Reserve. Out of all the camps we’ve visited in the delta, Simon and Marleen Bryon’s operation remains one of the most memorable for its simplicity and determination to offer only the essential comforts. Here, you can immerse yourself in the surroundings, allowing your senses to open up completely to the sights, sounds and smells of full-on Africa. Simon’s enthusiastic and expert guiding will have you enthralled from the get-go.

Hwange Bush Camp is set in the northern region of Hwange National Park, a secluded area of great scenic diversity and exceptional game viewing. Activities are flexible and range from game drives to walking with your professional guide. Being on foot near buffalo, lions or elephants is tremendously exciting and a must for the more adventurous.

Gonarezhou Bush Camp takes us to the spectacularly beautiful and rugged south eastern lowveld of Zimbabwe, a huge wilderness area with unique sandstone cliffs, rocky basalt river gorges, extensive tracts of woodland, riverine floodplains, wetlands and wide sweeping sand rivers. Here, you can sometimes spend all day exploring and not bump into another soul. Highly experienced owner guide Ant Kaschula’s comfortable mobile camp is as unassuming as he is, and can be set up in various parts of the Gonarezhou National Park. But Ant’s favourite spot is on the banks of the Runde River, within easy access of the flood plain and seasonal pans where game congregates.

Combine any of these with a visit to a bush camp which we rather unashamedly believe comes close to perfection in style, location and experience – and we’re not biased at all! John’s Camp, overlooking the teeming floodplain of the Zambezi River in Mana Pools, offers relaxed comfort, great guiding and rewarding wildlife encounters on both foot and drives. Owner-run by John and Nicci’s daughter, Sarah and her husband, the jovial, super-helpful and highly capable, Milo, you can’t help but feel right at home here. With Robin Pope Safaris’ support, the couple are making their mark in Mana and providing a wonderful space for families and friends to enjoy being together in this unique World Heritage wonderland.

Great locations, superb bush camps and excellent guiding – the formula for a truly immersive safari!

If you dream about a safari that really takes you up close… and if you’re thinking about a wildlife experience that allows you to be a part of it rather than just an observer… then contact us now to plan it!
