Namibia - 9 nights / 10 days
Namibia offers breathtaking scenery, wildlife and photographic opportunities which are unique in Africa. Situated along Africas most inhospitable coast Namibia is mostly desert The Kalahari in the east and the Namib in the west. Its wild open spaces are full of contrasts. Towering sand dunes, mountains, great canyons and shimmering sun soaked plains. Most types of big game can be found including rare species like roan antelope and Damara Dik-Dik. Birdlife is prolific.
This very special ten day safari itinerary is a combination of flying, providing an outstanding birds eye view, and excursions inland by landrover. Part, or all, of this itinerary would make a very nice extension to a safari in Botswana.
DAYS ONE - TWO
The Namib Rand Nature Reserve
The Namib Rand Nature Reserve, one of Southern Africas largest private conservation areas, is situated on the edge of the Namib Desert, close to Sossusvlei. Extending over almost 185,000 hectares, the reserve shares a common border of some 100 kilometres with the Nami-Naukluft Park in the west and is protected by the Nubib Mountains in the east. The particular attraction of the NamibRand is the diversity of desert landscapes - expansive sand and gravel plains interspersed by vast stretches of golden savannah alternative with majestic mountain ranges and tongues of dunes, their colours ranging from yellow-gold and ochre to rose, russet and deep brick red, paling and deepening as the day wanes. The variety of flora and fauna is as fascinating as are the colour nuances of the landscape which change as the day progresses.
Game species found in the reserve include gemsbok, zebra, springbok, red hartebeest, bat-eared fox, spotted hyena, aardwolf, Cape fox, African wildcat and black-backed jackal. The more rocky areas are inhabited by kudu, klipspringer, baboon and leopard, while the dunes harbour a rich and diverse micro fauna of moles, gerbils, snakes, geckos, beetles, spiders and ants. Over a hundred species of birds have been recorded at NamibRand, amongst which are ostrich, grouse, weavers and korhaans.
Accommodation will be in a permanent luxury tented camp.
DAYS THREE FIVE
The Skeleton Coast
Our co-hosts for this 3 day safari are the Schoeman Family. In 1977 Louw Schoeman, lawyer turned conservationist and tour operator, founded Skeleton Coast Safaris. The Schoeman children, who in the intervening years acquired and expanded their fathers expertise and vast background knowledge of this area, took over the management of his enterprise after his death in 1994. It would not be unusual to have one of Louws sons piloting the aeroplane during the safari however any of the operations pilot guides will be happy to share with guests their intimate knowledge of this area.
This fly-in safari will provide you with a unique desert experience as you wend your way north through part of the Namib Desert Damaraland, Kaokaoland and Skeleton Coast National Park. A major feature of this part of your safari is the flying (you have to like small aeroplanes!), which provides an outstanding birds eye view of shipwrecks scattered along the coast, diverse and ever changing geological formations and the refuges of the desert-dwelling animals. Excursions inland are done by landrover.
Accommodation is in three small fully-equipped camps which supply all basic needs.
DAY SIX EIGHT
Etosha National Park
Etosha Pan covers nearly a quarter of Namibias 22,270 km square Etosha National Park. Although it dominates the Park and is miraculous during the wet summer, Etosha is not really about the Pan but what happens on its fringes where nutrient rich grazing and water is found. With its network of natural and man-made waterholes the potential for game viewing wildlife is unlimited.
Accommodation will be in one of two permanent lodges on the park boundary.
DAY NINE
Waterberg Plateau
Okonjima lies nestled in the unspoilt beauty of the Omobroko Mountains, part of the well known Waterberg Plateau. In the Herero language, Okonkjima means "place of the baboons". Okonjima is home of the Africat Foundation. This unique programme will enable you to learn more about Namibia's most beautiful cats. Okonjima is renowned for the excellent opportunities for viewing and photographing both leopard and cheetah.
Very comfortable lodge accommodation available.
