Recommended Itinerary

DAY ONE

Arrive Kilimanjaro - overnight lodge Arusha

DAYS TWO & THREE

Depart Arusha by road for Tarangire

Tarangire National Park derives its name from the Tarangire River that rises in the highlands of central Tanzania and winds its way through the game sanctuary. The river lures the herds of plains migrants from the parched surrounding areas to its shrunken - but permanent - brackish waters during the dry season. The animals come by the thousands from as far north as the shores of Lake Natron, dramatically swelling the resident population of wildebeest, zebra, eland, elephant, hartbeest, buffalo and fringed-eared oryx. As the rainless days continue, the Tarangire's pools are clotted with thirsty migrants, and elephants begin to dig for underground streams in the dry river bed. The animals share the permanent pools with flocks of Tarangire's diverse bird life: green wood hoopoes, Fischer's lovebirds, white-bellied go-away birds, hornbills, cuckoos, and waterbirds such as goliath heron, purple gallinule, Egyptian goose and giant kingfisher.

Spend 2 nights in a tented camp deep within the park. Game viewing on foot and by vehicle

DAYS FOUR & FIVE

Depart Tarangire climbing up out of the Rift Valley into the Ngorongoro Highlands. Arriving at your accommodation after lunch you can spend the rest of the day exploring the Highlands with the following day game viewing down in the Ngorongoro Crater.

At the eastern edge of the Serengeti, the great buttressed slopes of the crater rise up to an altitude of 7000 feet (2236 m). Nearly 3 million years old, the ancient caldera of the once-volcanic Ngorongoro is surrounded by very steep walls rising 610 m, covers a total area of 259 square kms and is considered one of the Wonders of the Natural World. Also a World Heritage Site the crater shelters a most incredible wildlife haven. Some of Africa's last black rhino are protected within its rim, black-maned lions stalk the grasslands, flamingos crowd the soda lakes and giant tusked elephants wander the forests.

Spend two nights in one of the wonderfully comfortable farm style lodges situated close to the Crater in the lush volcanic soil farmlands

DAYS SIX - ELEVEN

Depart Ngorongoro Highlands dropping down onto the Serengeti Plains.

Serengeti National Park: at 14,763 sq kms is Tanzania's largest National Park and indisputably one of the finest wildlife areas anywhere in Africa. The landscape consists of vast open plains in the southeast, acacia savannah in the central area, wooded rolling hills in the north and extensive woodland, black clay plains and mountain ranges in the western corridor. World famous for the annual migration of its vast wildebeest herds, it boasts a huge variety of mammals and nearly 500 bird species.

We are increasingly looking to the peripheries of the Serengeti in an effort to find the freedom that people enjoyed in the old days. These areas tinclude Maswa Game Reserve in the south-west, the Gol Mountains in the south-east and the Loliondo and Piyaya conservations areas of the north-east. Here you are able to walk, game drive in open vehicles and night drive which is not permitted in Serengeti National Park. The feeling of remoteness and the spirit of adventure are immense.

Spend 6 nights in two locations the position being dictated by the seasonal migrations and movement of game. Accommodation based out of comfortable luxury tented camps.

DAY TWELVE

Depart Serengeti by scheduled flight for Arusha / Kilimanjaro
